In an era of extreme geo-political crisis exacerbated by disinformation from Moscow to Kyiv, Damascus, Lebanon , Tel Aviv and many hotspots across the globe, a rule of law conference for future lawyers from law schools across the World Held at the Hyatt Regency in the Nation’s capital last month helped provide some clarity on complex matters in a World that seems to be entangled in a perpetual tailspin.
“ The Jessup Competition is the world’s largest and most prestigious moot court competition, and the oldest moot court competition dedicated to international law. The competition attracts students from over 700 law schools in more than 90 countries.”
At the end of the four day Jessup International Moot Court Competition the overall winner in the competition that featured teams from Nine nations from Africa, was University of the Philippines. Second place was Universidad Torcuato di Tella, from Argentina.
“The Competition is based on a hypothetical dispute between countries before the International Court of Justice. Teams of five law students prepare oral and written pleadings for both the Applicant and Respondent. Released each year on September 1, the Jessup problem or “Compromis” is famous for presenting complex and timely issues of public international law. Recent topics have included the International Criminal Court’s jurisdiction, international free speech law, international environmental law, the right to self-determination, international human rights, and terrorism.”
On its web site the Boston University School of Law about 24 miles from the hallowed Gillette stadium grounds of the New England Patriots, described the crux of this years main discourse “ The Jessup 2024 Problem concerned traitors and crooks, and raises issues related to the right to political expression, statelessness, the right to a nationality, and the scope of the United Nations Security Council’s authority in the pacific settlement of disputes.”

While none of the African teams placed in the final rounds Nigeria represented by two University of Lagos Akoka Campus law students — Dumebi Anyama and Jason Okoli Chwukudi, flew back with the “Jessup spirit of camaraderie and academic excellence.”
This reporter journeyed with the competitors on the inbound trip on Ethiopian Airlines aka The spirit of Africa, on a circuitous route from Lagos through Rome to SMF. We parted ways in Washington. “The competition was very steep. Having had the privilege of watching some of the advanced rounds and the finals, I could tell that this was a gathering of really talented law students,” Intoned Okoli Jason after the competition.
He added ‘The Nigerian team put up a good account of themselves despite the challenges, like not having their full team for the competition. Though no African team proceeded to the advanced rounds the Nigerian team had the honor of winning the Spirit of Jessup Award which recognizes the team that best exemplifies the Jessup spirit of camaraderie and academic excellence. “

Kaufman Securities Law Competition at Fordham University on April 8 — one of several first-place victories for UVA Law Extramural Moot Court with extra fillip that included an appearance before a panel of circuit court judges that included Justice Samuel Alito Jr.
“The final round was an incredible experience,” Doerr said. “By that point Trina and I had argued five times, which helped me to feel really comfortable with the material. That said, there was definitely an added layer of nerves being in the final round and arguing in front of Justice Alito.”
