DISCLAIMER: This tutorial series is for educational purposes only. Any advice will be welcomed. I hope this will help you maintain your anonymity. I have used Windows 10 operating system for this tutorial, as it is most people’s primary operating system, but if you really care about your privacy it should not be used as your primary operating system. Use linux instead, and when possible, open source software. You don’t have to strictly follow the things I’m going to do. This is just to give you an idea so you can follow it or change what suits you best.

In this episode we’re showing you how to install a real-time voice changer. This tool is essential for anyone looking to keep their identity concealed when making voice calls or recording audio. We will install the Voxal app to distort our voice on our host machine (Windows 10) so that the VM gets the input audio already distorted from the host.

I recommend that you watch the video tutorial while reading this article to make it easier to follow the whole process.

How to Be Anonymous #5: Real-time Voice Changer

I have simplified the tutorial as much as possible to make it easy and quick to follow. Let’s get started:

1) Downloading and Installing Voxal

Go to https://www.nchsoftware.com/voicechanger/index.html and click on Download Now.

Voxal website

Launch the .exe file and follow the installation process. When it finishes you will need to restart the computer.

Installing Voxal

Launch Voxal and click on “Custom” and “New” to create a new voice profile.

Here you can add effects to change your voice. I will add just the Pitch Shifter for this tutorial, but it‘s better if you add more effects, like the “distortion” one.

Adding the Pitch Shifter voice effect in Voxal

If you reduce this number in the Pitch Shifter effect, your voice will be deeper.

Voxal’s Pitch Shifter settings

Click the “Preview” button to hear your voice already
distorted.

Clicking Preview in Voxal

If you don’t use the VM, you probably will need to select the virtual microphone device that Voxal creates in the app’s settings you want to use (Zoom, Firefox…). I have tested it in a Zoom call within the VM and I didn’t
need to change anything, my voice was already distorted.

Hope you liked this episode and see you in the next one!
