The Lore and the Game

After several discussions between the creative committee and the developer, we’ve decided that the Lore will be somewhat independent from the game itself.

The community will have more of a chance to make the game their own by submitting quests and getting paid for it. If we stick religiously to the Lore then it will lock the game into a certain sequence that isn’t conducive to this creative expression by our community. It also means it will take a lot longer to for the developer to bang out the pre-alpha version of the game.

Each Area will still have three threads to be voted on at time of its development, but the threads and the quests will need to be written according to the Area map as seen below.

The Game

Game Background

We’re still on track for a Q2 release.

Soon, we’ll open a bot in Discord so users who are interested in testing the pre-alpha version of the Legendao Universe can sign up to do so. Signing up does not guarantee a testing spot. We are discussing the best way to do it: if it will be via wallet or email and what the possible rewards may be. Nothing has been decided on but as soon as we know, you will too.

The pre-alpha game has six points of interaction — we’re keeping it small so we can give a taste of what the Legendao platform is going to be like as soon as possible.

It will be a lot easier for the community to submit quests when they can actually get an idea of how the gameplay works by playing it.

The Quests

The Snow Demon

It’s important for anyone submitting quests to read the Lore so their submissions are relevant and acceptable.

For example, someone recently submitted a quest about a diamond heist replete with all the details you’d expect to find in a city. But we don’t have an area in the game that has anything to do with a city, so without reading the Lore the user didn’t know that and unfortunately created a quest we can’t use.

We thought it would help if we would describe some of the quests that have already been accepted and describe why.

Name: The Shadow Panther’s Ambush (Combat)

Text: The darkness seems to come alive as a pair of glowing eyes emerge from the shadows. Suddenly, a sleek black panther leaps out of hiding, ready to pounce.

Enemy Name: Shadow Panther
Enemy Description: Black as midnight, lithe and muscular, with razor-sharp claws and fangs, and eyes that seem to glow with a feral intelligence.
Enemy Difficulty: strong

Victory Message: You emerge from the darkness, victorious over the Shadow Panther. Its limp body fades into the shadows, leaving only silence behind.
Defeat Message: he Shadow Panther’s ferocity overpowers you, and you are left bleeding and injured, limping back to safety to nurse your wounds.

A quest like this will usually be accepted because it’s portable — you can use it in any area as a random quest. It also depicts an interesting enemy and there’s an art behind it that fits with the tone of the Lore.

Name: The Enchanted Forest’s Riddle

Text: You enter the enchanted forest, and as you walk deeper into the woods, you hear a faint voice calling out to you. You follow the sound and find a talking tree.

Question: I am always hungry; I must always be fed. The finger I touch, will soon turn red. What am I?

Correct Answer: Fire
Wrong Answer 1: Water
Wrong Answer 2: Wind
Wrong Answer 3: Soil

Win Text: The tree’s bark glows, and it steps aside, allowing you to pass.
Lose Text: The tree shakes its branches, and its roots tangle around your feet, not letting you pass.

This quest was also something we’d accept for several reasons:

  • the tone fits with the Lore
  • no unsavory language or stupid jokes were used in the creation of this riddle
  • it wasn’t a riddle someone obviously Googled and swiped from Readers’ Digest or something.

Notably, we haven’t received that many riddle submissions. This was one of the few that was actually suitable in light of the above comments. We can’t accept riddles someone just found online, especially because anyone can Google the answer easily. We enjoy funny riddles, but those with crude language are not going to be accepted (and aren’t really that funny). And again, if someone makes the character who tells the riddle someone that fits in with the tone of the Lore, the riddle quest is much more likely to be accepted.

Challenges are more complicated, but here’s a good example of one and some necessary points to make about it:

Name: Haunted Forest

Text: As you approach the dark and misty forest, you feel a shiver run down your spine. The forest seems to loom over you. You hesitate for a moment, but then you remind yourself that you are here to prove yourself. You step into the mist…

Strength Button: Bravely Explore the Forest
STR Win Text: You bravely explore the forest and find some valuable items, including a rare gemstone. You leave the forest richer and more confident than before.
STR Lose Text: You encounter a ghostly apparition that frightens you so much that you run out of the forest after going through several tumbles
STR Lose Consequence: HP lost medium

Dexterity Button: Sneak Around the Forest!
DEX Win Text: You carefully and quietly navigate through the forest avoiding leaves, branches or loose ground and find some hidden treasures, including a stash of gold coins. You leave the forest rich and satisfied.
DEX Lose Text: You step on a fallen branch snapping in half and sending echoes down the quiet dark forest. The next moment, you are surrounded by ghosts. You barely escape with your life, leaving the forest empty-handed.
DEX Lose Consequence: HP Lost High

Wisdom Button: Summon the Spirits!
WIS Win Text: You manage to communicate with the ghostly spirits and learn that they are not malevolent. They give you a valuable piece of information that helps you in your quest, and you leave the forest wiser and more enlightened than before.
WIS Lose Text: You try to communicate with the spirits, but your lack of wisdom about the supernatural world angers them. They attack you and begin slicing away your flesh, and you barely escape with your life.
WIS Lose Consequence: HP Lost High

It’s well-thought out. The actions match the stats. But there are some points to make here that everyone who submits a quest must understand:

  • in no way are we bound to keep the text exactly the same if we accept a quest. We have forest areas within the game where we can adapt this quest to, but there is no area that will specifically be a haunted forest.
  • the developer may decide on the loss consequence himself due to game flow
  • we may add or change any content we deem necessary to make the quest more useful. We may edit text. We may change around aspects of the quest. But even if we do, you still get paid.
