They began arriving a week after Philip broadcast our first call to arms for his former colleagues. He never mentioned a location, so the only people who could decipher his cryptic message would be those who knew him and the location of Starlight Venus.
I sat in the mess hall with Alex and my brother, sipping coffee, which had improved immeasurably from many hours of tinkering with the formulation coding in our replicators.
“Most of the base is operational now, sis. We just need more people.”
“How many do we have so far?”
“Twelve, two are kids, but they help.”
“How many do we need?”
“Philip says a skeleton staffing is somewhere north of twenty.”
“There’s something bothering me about this place. Can you muster everyone at operations so we can talk, please, Lars?”
“Of course.”
Alex hugged me lovingly, and I kissed her forehead. She was more fond of me than I was of her, which was a worry since I wouldn’t lead another on a trail of false love.
We strolled together, hand in hand, to our operations centre, where we parted…
