With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, the love is really flowing toward people who adore each other — and money is really flowing toward retailers so consumers can express that love. In fact, according to data from the National Retail Federation, people will be feeling the love to the tune of $25.8 billion in 2024. That is only slightly less than what people spent last year, when consumers shelled out $25.9 billion for their Valentine’s Day celebrations.

On the individual level, people plan to pay an average of $185.81, including spending on:

  • Significant others (86 percent)
  • Other family members (56 percent)
  • Pets (31 percent)
  • Friends (28 percent)
  • Children’s classmates and teachers (24 percent)
  • Coworkers (16 percent)

And how will people be spending their $185.81? The following are the items they plan to buy:

  • Candy (57 percent)
  • Greeting cards (40 percent)
  • Flowers (39 percent)
  • An evening out (32 percent)
  • Jewelry (22 percent)
