CLIMB YOUR WAY OUT OF HELL

EVALUATE THE PEOPLE AROUND YOU

It’s important to select who are you in touch with, regularly!

Surround yourself with your real friends.

When I started writing my first book (after several aborted attempts), this is what my book coach Kiruba Shankar told me.

When you announce that you are writing your first book, check the reaction of those around you. When someone makes fun or ridicules you and discourages you, drop them from your circle. Take note of those who are positive and encouraging, and those who will be ready to break your fall, when required. This small group becomes the people you surround yourself with.

This was true for book-writing. My small group has been active now for over five years. This group continues to push everyone in it, to push boundaries, to do more. (My seventh book is coming out this week, ample proof, you would agree).

As you plan on getting out of bad scenarios (like the current nonsense), you need positive people around you. You need DOERs around you. People to inspire and people to look up to. There are enough pessimists and naysayers in the world. I don’t want them anywhere near me. Nor should you.

What I need are ideators, alternative thinkers, creative people. Those are the people I want to meet regularly, to discuss with and use as a sounding board.

I need to survive, to succeed. I need people who will jump into the water to save me, not those who stand by on the shore, shouting instructions to me!

BE CAREFUL ABOUT THE PEOPLE AROUND YOU: Board of Directors, team, friends, partners, allies. Pick them carefully — and give them more than you get from them.

EVALUATE: This includes your employees and associates. The work-from- home model removes all wrappers. It is easy to identify the doers.

Evaluate the people around you. Surround yourself with people who will empower you, think for you, make you better. (And again, you give them more, a lot more).
