The other day I went to the post office when the lady at the counter asked me whether I also had a bank account with them.

When I answered “no” she asked me how much I paid for my current bank account.

Some time back in 2015 I started writing more regularly here on Medium.

And at one point I decided to start a publication.

Simply because I felt like it was a good way to build some kind of community.

It’ll be better if you do it.

Because you add a little bit more features.

Because you care a little bit more.

Because you make it a little bit better.

Because you lower the price a little bit more.

From employee to entrepreneur

It’s hard to go from employee to entrepreneur or freelancer.

And one of the trickiest things, maybe even the trickiest thing is that you’d have to get used to doing a lot of stuff without getting paid.

The problem about change

Is that it requires change…

It requires rules to change.

Governments to change.

Institutions to change

Organizations to change.

The thing you’re thinking about creating

How are people going to find out about it?

It’s tempting to only start thinking about it once it’s done.

And it’s even more tempting to tell yourself that it’s going to be so good that it’s going to take…

So what are you still afraid of?

Your boss?

Your family?

The economy?

The critics?

Society?

It’s very likely that those are just excuses.

How to build a company in the 21st century

You don’t.

You build a community first.

And then you build a company around that community offering whatever that community might want and is willing to pay for.

One can’t exist without the other.

Profitable, hard and important.

They can’s exist without the other.

If it’s profitable but not hard, it’ll stop working sooner or later because everybody will end up doing it.
