Colors are instrumental in how we perceive the world, it also guides us to predict, understand, and make decisions.

Color scheme communicates the message behind a design on both visual and psychological levels.

We have various color schemes that create the basics for color palettes.

  • Monochromatic
These colors share the tint, hues, and tones of one primary color. it is the simplest of all color schemes, and they are mostly used in minimal design because one hue results in a less distracting layout.
  • Analogous
This is based on three colors located next to each other on the color wheel, this can easily be found in nature for example trees in the autumn as leaves changes color. These can be warm or cool colors and are easy to work with.
  • Complimentary
This scheme uses colors that are on opposite sides of the color wheel, for example, purple and yellow. We can vary the brightness and saturation to create some refined color palettes.
  • Split complementary
This scheme uses colors that are on either side of the colors complement, they form like a triangle at the bottom.
  • Triadic
These colors are evenly spaced in an equilateral triangle on the color wheel. The three colors will be exactly 120 degrees from each other, this scheme is considered to be more vibrant. They keep harmony but they deliver some high contrast.

Important questions to ask before choosing color palettes

What problem are we trying to solve?

  • understand the product.
  • understand the type of problem that the product is trying to solve.
  • understand what the product is trying to communicate.

Who are the users we are targeting?

  • understand who the users are.
  • understand the type of users you are targeting.
  • understand the region your users belong to.
  • understand what their culture is like.
