Scenario: The user is trying to view a website to help them buy a car. But, the content can’t load without the user’s location. They need to enter their ZIP code and first name.

Challenge: Ask them where they live and who they are without sounding like you’re unnecessarily mining their data.

Body: 45 characters max

Button(s): 15 characters max

Gathering The Context

This one is tricky. It’s challenging to deliver a reassurance message with only 45 characters. Users might be asking why they have to give their data just for viewing a website. Since the challenge asks for sensitive information, the approach of telling users that their data won’t be misused is not too reassuring since they might question this action in the first place.

So I want to use a different approach by proposing what they will get if they tell us their name and ZIP code.

Crafting The Copy

Halo, ___!

Mau cari mobil di daerah mana?

_____

Rationalization

With a conversational and friendly tone, I crafted the copy with questions about where users want to search the car (aka their domicile). The aim of this copy was to tell users that the website will give personalized car recommendations from the nearest place.

To ask their name, I encouraged users to fill in the blank after the greeting word “Halo”. Therefore, the website can get users’ names and domicile without being too direct about it.
