Full Disclosure: I Am neither a medical expert nor have any experience in providing medical advice to anyone. However, I strongly believe some things can be better tackled when we trust our common sense and by taking some very simple & easy practical steps.

Over the years, we have started doing what other people do (aka herd mentality) and what the media experts throw at us, as opposed to using our own common sense. For eg, the Usage of Hand Sanitizers.

But pause for a moment and think about it — Hands Sanitizers are required only after you have touched public surfaces or come in contact with the virus droplets

Why not think about how to avoid touching public surfaces in the first place.? Am not advocating that people should not use Hand Sanitizers. In fact, they should. Anything that you do to maintain the highest hygiene standards will help. But the herd and the hoarding mentality of Hand Sanitizers are not going to help anyone

And thus the immediate focus has to be on avoiding touching objects or surfaces that are used in common areas.

Here is a compilation of 7 very simple & easy practical steps that you should absolutely take to avoid getting the infection or passing it on to other people.

Common Sense Tip 1

It is now known that you can be easily infected by the virus if you touch your eyes, nose, or mouth with your fingers. Over the years, we are habituated to touching our T section on the face multiple times during the day. Studies have shown that we touch our faces almost 24 times in an hour. Considering, we are awake on an average of 16 hours a day, we touch our faces almost 400 times a day.

Any reduction in this count will only help in reducing the chances of you getting the virus.

To avoid touching your eyes wear a pair of glasses at all times so that you don’t touch your eyes accidentally. For your mouth and nose, wear a mask to avoid touching your nose and mouth. The mask does not offer any known protection from the virus but does a good job from you accidentally touching your nose and mouth

This will do a great job in reducing the number of times you touch your eyes, nose, and mouth

Common Sense Tip 2

If your eyes or your nose itches, try not to rub it with your fingers. Use your arm or the back of your hand or your knuckles. Go ahead try it right now, its extremely easy.

It’s only about breaking the age-old habit of using our fingers to rub our eyes or nose. The fewer “fingers” contact with your eyes, nose, and mouth — the better it is.

Common Sense Tip 3

Use your knuckles to operate switches, elevator buttons (inside and outside), avoid touching door handles — instead use your body or legs to open the doors.

Common Sense Tip 4

While traveling in public transport (inside the vehicle and waiting areas) — Clean your seat, armrest, touchscreen, etc. with a disinfecting wipe once inside an aircraft, bus, train, or another vehicle

While staying at the hotel — clean key surfaces, doorknobs, remote controls, etc at the hotel or other public accommodation

Common Sense Tip 5

Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds every time you come back home from a public place. While everyone knows how to do wash their hands, but this time you have to do it differently.

Step 1: Wet hands with running water

Step 2: Apply enough soap to cover wet hands

Step 3: Scrub all surfaces of the hands — including the back of hands, between fingers, and under nails — for at least 20 seconds.

Step 4: Rinse thoroughly with running water

Step 5: Dry hands with a clean cloth or single-use towel

Wash your hands often, especially before eating; after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing; and going to the bathroom.

If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water, if hands are visibly dirty.

Common Sense Tip 6

Every time you come back home from a public place don’t hug, kiss, or touch the faces of your loved ones with your fingers. Don’t shake hands. The first thing that you should do is go to the bathroom and rinse your hands with soap water for 20 seconds.

It sure will feel odd to not kiss your kids or loved ones. But remember you are doing this for the benefit of their own well-being.

Common Sense Tip 7

Lastly, avoid sharing forwards that you receive on WhatsApp groups or any social media networks without checking the authenticity of the news. Remember negative news travels faster. It does not help in any manner if you accelerate the spread of false information.

Final Thoughts

Considering the spread of the virus already to so many countries and the fact may have to live with it for years to come, our only hope seems to be someone inventing and manufacturing an effective vaccination against this virus

Over the last 2 months, we have entered some uncharted territories and possibly going through some unprecedented times.

And it requires unique ways of protecting yourself and your loved ones, which means breaking old habits and inculcating new ones. And the time to start is right now from this very moment.
