There are rhymes in life that are common to everyone, yet unique to us the first time we experience them. Whether it’s growing pains, or realizing a truth that has always been there, our lives are filled with moments that change us, for better or worse, into something new.

By reflecting on these changes, we have the opportunity to reevaluate what is important to us, and reorient ourselves to be the people we want to be.

With this month’s theme, Tell Me About Your Song,” our writers shared their personal experiences with love, heartache, childhood memories, overcoming obstacles, and rebirth.

Each story submitted has been a pleasure to read as we dive deeper into the hearts and minds of our community, and getting to the crux of the human condition.

While we cannot showcase every writer, we appreciate every submission and story shared.

In honor of that, we would like to take this opportunity to celebrate some of the stories that captivated our hearts and minds. Without further ado, here are a few of our favorites from the month of March, hand-picked by your friendly editors at Modern Women.

Brenda Covarrubias’ top pick for April is… “The Moment I Decided to Leave,” by Evolving Together.

At some point in their lives, everyone will be forced to choose between change and stability. It is not an easy choice to make for many of us, as the future is unpredictable and sometimes, it is easier to stay in a place that makes us unhappy than risk doing something new. This essay is a perfect read for anyone in that situation as the writer shares her personal journey in divorce and how liberating the choice was for her.

Mariana Carvalho’s top pick of the month is… “Why Young Brides are Keeping Their Surname (And Giving It to Their Kids)” by Cindy Steinberg (she/her). Cindy brilliantly brings data and her personal journey on the change of surnames for women and some of her LGBTQIA+ friends. Keeping your surname is a sign of empowerment to keep your identity, but changing your surname to your partner’s can also be empowering “as a way to separate themselves from bigoted families”, as she mentions.

ADEOLA SHEEHY-ADEKALE’s top pick for April is… Reading Lyra McKee while Gaza is Burning by Sara Relli.

This was such a moving and thought provoking piece that highlights the fuitility of war and it’s impact on all sides. The parallels between Gaza and Northern Ireland, bring the situation home in personal way for me but more importantly reframe faith, hate and a war mentality that lasts long after the violence stops. I am forever grateful for being introduced to Lyra McKee’s work and for being given a new lens to look through thanks to this piece of writing.
