Definitely in the early stages. It would be great if we could make fMRI less obtrusive so that we could use the technique in a more natural environment, but a little bit of progress at a time. They are getting closer to quality portable MEG devices though, I think.
Machine learning can give us insight into problems that we do not currently know how to solve. That is indeed the true power of ML. That’s one of the issues with some of the neural network based approaches: we can get a computer to figure out an apparent pattern, but figuring out what the machine ended up learning is still a very difficult task.
