God is Faithful

Gospel in Nature. Part 3

No matter how long nights last, we know without a doubt that morning will come. No matter how long darkness lingers, we know it will certainly give way to light. One of the loud messages that nature echoes every day is that “God is faithful.” We know, not just because we have been told, but also because we see it again and again that indeed God is faithful. It is that by that certainty we can count days, mark years and name seasons. It is by that character and steadfastness that we can make plans. It is by that light we can dream and hope. It is by those rays of faithfulness that we can live and try again when we don’t get the desired results.

Even in the moments when we don’t see the sun directly, we know it has risen because everything else comes alive. In the words of C. S. Lewis paraphrased “I know that there is a God not because I see Him, but because by Him, I see everything else.” The message of God’s faithfulness is so ingrained in nature that it is everywhere we turn. Even when we’re not paying attention, the things we pay attention to continue to echo the message to us. God’s faithfulness is unmistakable.

God’s faithfulness is not hinged on any other entity. He is far too faithful for His faithfulness to depend on any other creation. He is the only one faithful enough for Him to determine How faithful He would be. Not even the predictability is nature and the consistency of seasons is enough to describe how faithful a God He is. So all of the certainty we see still falls short in describing how reliable He is. The sun does not only shine on those who believe or expect it to shine, it just does. It doesn’t just shine on the good and righteous, it just does. While God’s nature reflects in His creation, He never delegates nature to do what He would have done. He never delegates that duty. He is God and He is faithful.
