The Women Who Are Scared

“She is clothed in strength and dignity, and she laughs, without fear of the future” — Proverbs 31:25

For the one who is scared,

To patiently wait without compromise,

For a love that is kind, rare and true.

How terrifying,

To be worthy of undying devotion.

To have the power to break a person in two.

To give them permission to do the same to you.

Is it not scary,

To face the world in a cloak of dignity.

When you are slapped with labels,

That make you seem pitiful, wayward, unsatisfied, or expired?

For the one who is scared,

To let her guard down,

And accept that it is not a sign of weakness,

To need someone.

How Terrifying,

To feel like you will celebrate your friends forever,

And wonder when anyone will ever celebrate you.

Is it not scary,

To join yourself forever with a lover,

Eyes glistening, hearts beating,

Not knowing whether your promises will stand the test of time?

For the one who is scared,

To feel that tiny heartbeat for the first time.

You will never know a sweeter feeling,

Than the absolute trust of that tiny body curled into yours.

How terrifying,

To watch them grow and learn,

Things that you were not ready to teach them.

Is it not scary,

To let them fly,

Away from your protection,

Into a world so mangled with hate, discouragement and despair?

For the one who is scared,

That you may never fall in love,

With the one you are with.

How terrifying,

That you sometimes long,

For a life that resides only in your imagination.

Is it not scary,

That the one you fall asleep next to,

And the one you see when you close your eyes,

Are two different people?

For the one who is scared,

To soar to unimaginable heights,

Who voluntarily clips her wings,

Who does herself no favors by playing small.

How terrifying,

To waste a life full of potential,

To die with your gifts still firmly planted in your chest.

Is it not scary,

To watch another excel

At yet another idea,

That you didn’t pursue?

For the one who is scared,

Of criticism.

Of barely there whispers, and thinly veiled venom,

How terrifying,

To live life for others,

To sacrifice your happiness on the alter of gossip.

Is it not scary,

To take for granted all the goodness in front of your face,

And focus instead on all the foolishness behind your back?

For the one who is scared,

Of starting over.

Of having the courage,

To admit that she made a mistake,

How terrifying,

To waste another second,

Beating a dead horse,

When a life full of new opportunities awaits.

Is it not scary,

To forever remain shackled,

To an unending cycle of misery?

To raise a child,

In a loveless home?

For the one who is scared,

That nobody else will ever love her.

That life will not grant second chances.

How terrifying,

To start afresh with a stranger,

Knowing that love wasn’t ready the first time around.

Is it not scary,

To allow yourself be convinced,

That you are so unlovable?

To pass up the chance,

To do it right the next time?

For the women who carry,

Their fear in their breasts,

For the women who expand their lives,

Or shrink it,

In proportion to their courage,

Know this;

Some women will drown in the Ocean,

While some women will bathe in it.

How terrifying.

Is it not scary?
