Mid-Spring Weather, Climate and Snowfall Update for New England
It appears that unusually warm weather is increasingly common in New England.
New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut all had their second-warmest January through April stretch on record, and at least part of May may be on the warm side, according to federal agencies.
Other recent weather and climate highlights in New England and elsewhere:
— The temperature in Concord, New Hampshire, hit 90 degrees on April 14, 6 degrees higher than the previous record set in 1870, the National Weather Service Eastern Region Headquarters says. The mercury reached about 85 degrees where I live near Newfound Lake, about 50 minutes northwest of Concord.
— Snowfall was below average in much of New England, especially southern areas, from October 2022 through April 2023, according to the Northeast Regional Climate Center.
— In stark contrast, snowfall at the Alta Ski Area in Utah exceeded 900 inches (75 feet) on April 25, according to the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI). That’s the most on record there.
— The Feb. 2 to 5 winter storm and cold wave in the Northeast led to an estimated $1.6 billion in damages. It was one of seven billion-dollar weather and climate disasters so far this year, the NCEI says. Since 1980, the U.S. has faced 355 weather and climate disasters with at least $1 billion in overall damages/costs. The grand total tops $2.54 trillion.
New England Weather and Climate Update, With Snowfall Totals and Spring Outlook
BTW, a snowstorm on May 9–10 in 1977 dumped up to 18 inches of snow in New England, according to the National Weather Service Boston/Norton office. The measurable snowfall is the latest on record in Boston, Hartford, Connecticut, and Providence, Rhode Island.
