Record Cold in the Northeast, Snowfall Update for the 2022–23 Season

A cold front led to record cold temperatures in parts of the Northeast this week and a frost advisory is in effect for early tomorrow in parts of New Hampshire and Maine.

But there’s a fair chance that June, July and August will be warmer than normal, according to NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center

This morning’s temperatures were as low as 12 degrees in New Hampshire (at Mount Washington), 17 degrees in Vermont, 19 degrees in Maine and in the 20s in Massachusetts and Connecticut.

The low hit 30 in Portland, Maine, making it the latest spring freeze since 2002, according to the National Weather Service office that covers western Maine and New Hampshire. Sixty years ago was the last time it was that cold there this late in spring.

Record low high temperatures were also reported in some areas yesterday, and record snowfall (a trace of snow) was reported in Burlington, Vermont. A trace of snow also fell in Caribou, Maine, on May 17, the weather service office there says.

Meanwhile, parts of the Northeast became abnormally dry in the last week (17.51 percent of the region as of 8 a.m. EDT on May 16 versus 12.63 percent a week earlier), according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.

More images, including ones covering snowfall in the Eastern U.S. during the 2022–23 season and the eruption of Mount St. Helens 43 years ago today. BTW, I was a news intern at The Bulletin in Bend, Oregon, in the fall of 1979, about six months before the eruption.
