After a horrendous discussion with Lisa and Andy Sandford where they broke the news that they have never watched (or even heard of the musical Hamilton) i had to take action.

So, this week i am basing my weeknotes around lyrics from Hamilton!

*sidenote… a few of these are talking about the Festival. It’s hard to get it out of my head as i have been getting lots of bits done whilst its quieter and most of the team are on leave. Probably a sign that i should take some but i got stuff to do!

“I’m not throwing away my shot”

As you probably already know (i feel like i have been non-stop festival waffle for months now) we are running the Festival of the Future this year but a bit differently. I can’t go into details or the comms team will kill me (there’s an order to these things) but it’s going to be bigger and better than last year!

When you tell someone an idea like this you get one of two responses

“Wow. You are being really ambitious! is there anything i can do to help?”

OR

“Wow. You are being really ambitious… are you sure you know what you’re doing?”

Which in a way can be exciting and disheartening. But we are ‘not throwing away our shot’ of making this something amazing and memorable.

It does feel that if last year was version 1 of the idea this year, we are now developing version 4/5. It’s a big jump but maybe that’s the leap we needed to take.

“We are a powder keg about to explode i need someone to lighten the load”

Basically, for the last 5 or so months it has really been a team of 4 planning and creating the entire Festival which is actually a smaller team then last year.

It has gotten to the point recently when the amount of work has really taken off and it was time for some help! Luckily Getting more people involved in festival wasn’t that hard because people want to help. We have started splitting out responsibilities and spreading the load.Fingers crossed it all comes together in time.

“I wanna be in the room where it happens”

This week has also been about culture change and resolving conflic before it happens. In a piece of work there has been some comments about people taking things too personally and being protective of what they are currently doing.

Getting people involved is a great way to resolve this.Hence the lyric. There’s a common trope with leadership that as people get more ‘power’ they surround themselves with more Yes people. Having the people who don’t agree as part of these meetings is a challenge but it brings those concerns into the light instead of them festering in the darkness (good name for a band).

We had a meeting today where we put everyones thoughts out on the table and talked though next steps. Everyone is now on board and on the same journey so hopefully this will reduce the back chatter and concerns people are raising.

I hope that this has either been interesting to read of been some subtle marketing to get you to watch Hamilton.

What are you waiting for, watch it already!

Its on Disney + ;)

Sam out.
