Back in the day — and by back in the day I actually mean a couple of years ago — I spent a lot of time out and about, networking.

Partly because it was useful for the businesses I was representing, but also because I had little else to keep me occupied bar my Kindle and whatever rubbish was showing on the TV.

I should clarify that networking in Papua New Guinea consisted of business breakfasts, charity events, trade shows and the tried and tested favourite —a handle or two at the yotty (translation: a small mug of of SP lager at the Yacht Club).

Here in London, I’ve neglected the fine art of the handshake these last couple of years because I’m not really in a customer facing role at the moment and because it wasn’t apparent to me who I should be networking with.

But recently I’ve taken the plunge again. The first being the event I mentioned in Me and the Machine and this evening an event held at Campus London around Data and Tech For Good (which ended up being an interesting sequitur from the first talk).

I couldn’t stick around as I had to rush off and pick up my daughter, but two clear benefits have presented themselves to me from these events:

You meet some pretty interesting people

You learn some pretty darned interesting things

Maybe it’s time to dust off those business cards and work on my smile.
