Smoke from Wildfires in Nova Scotia is Over New England, and More Record Heat is Possible
Smoke from Nova Scotia wildfires is over parts of New England today, and more record heat may arise this week, according to federal forecasters.
“Nova Scotia smoke has made its way to the surface, we can actually smell it here at the office!” the National Weather Service Boston/Norton office tweeted.
“Winds around an area of high pressure in the Gulf of Maine will draw in smoke from wildfires in Nova Scotia,” according to a hazardous weather outlook that covers New Hampshire and western Maine. The smoke will lead to hazy skies and some of it could be at low levels.
Meanwhile, “anomalous warmth” will extend across the Northeast into Friday, with temperatures running 15 degrees to 20 degrees above normal likely to set some record highs before a cooling trend for the weekend, according to a Weather Prediction Center forecast discussion.
Record Cold in the Northeast, Snowfall Update for the 2022–23 Season
The heat follows some record highs in New England on May 28. The mercury hit 92 in Augusta, Maine, and 91 in Bangor on May 28 — both records for the date, according to preliminary data.
The heat also follows some brisk lows in the 30s in Massachusetts this morning, the weather service says.
