Soggy, Cool Summer in New England

Getting sick of soggy weather in much of New England?

Tough luck because it appears that wet weather will linger for a while.

Indeed, July may be wetter and warmer than normal, according to NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center.

“Showery weather continues through mid-week as upper level disturbances gradually cross New England,” says the National Weather Service office that covers New Hampshire and western Maine. “Embedded thunderstorms and downpours remain the primary focus with this activity.”

Happy (Soggy) Fourth of July!

“Drier and warmer weather builds into the region by around Thursday, however showers cannot be entirely ruled out as humid conditions persist. The reprieve is brief, with rain and thunderstorm chances increasing again this weekend,” the weather service says.

Some better news for fair weather fans: New Hampshire had no drought as of 8 a.m. (EDT) on June 27. Most of the rest of New England also had zero drought or only abnormally dry conditions, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.

Some recent weather and climate highlights in New England and the Northeast:

A total of 17.3 inches of precipitation fell last month at the summit of Mount Washington (6,288 feet) in New Hampshire. That’s nearly 9 inches above normal and it was the second wettest June on record there. June 1996 was the wettest, with precipitation totaling 19.96 inches, according to the Mount Washington Observatory.

— All but three of 35 major climate sites in the Northeast were cooler than normal last month, and it was one of the 20 coolest Junes on record at 13 sites, according to the Northeast Regional Climate Center.

— Portland in Maine had its 19th wettest June on record, and precipitation in Concord, New Hampshire, was 123 percent of normal, according to the center.
