11th Anniversary of Superstorm Sandy, 12 Years Since “Snowtober”

Eleven years ago today, Superstorm Sandy severely damaged parts of New Jersey, New York and New England.

The mammoth storm is the fifth costliest hurricane on record in the United States ($86.5 billion in 2023 dollars). Hurricanes Katrina (2005), Harvey (2017), Ian (2022) and Maria (2017) are the top four, according to the National Centers for Environmental Information.

“Sandy’s impact on major population centers caused widespread interruption to critical water / electrical services and also caused 159 deaths (72 direct, 87 indirect),” according to the centers.

For a comprehensive look at Sandy — before, during and after the storm made landfall in New Jersey — read my post from a year ago: Superstorm Sandy: 10th Anniversary Memories and Images. It has lots of info and images.

The National Hurricane Center also as a detailed 157-page report on Hurricane Sandy.

And some of the Sandy-related stories that I wrote or contributed to at the Asbury Park Press, where I covered the environment for 30 years (1985 to 2015), remain on the web, including on the USA Today website. They include: Pollutants, debris still plague coastal lakes after Sandy, N.J.’s coastal lakes hammered by Sandy (a video), Sandy left N.J. shore with massive mold problem and 2 years later, Sandy improvements slow but steady.

Today also marks the 12th anniversary of the “Snowobter” storm, aka “White Halloween.” Some wintry stuff fell today where I live near Newfound Lake in central New Hampshire. In parts of Maine, 3 to 6 inches of snow was expected by tomorrow night, “with locally higher amounts possible across the higher terrain,” the National Weather Service office in Caribou says.

Winter Weather Preparedness Week in New England runs from tomorrow through Nov. 4, the Gray/Portland, Maine, weather service office noted.
