Philippe May Approach New England Following Record High Temperatures
Did you enjoy yesterday’s record warmth in much of New England?
It was quite warm where I live near Newfound Lake in New Hampshire. The lake also felt warm enough for a roughly 15-minute swim (all crawl and I could have kept swimming), and I later went kayaking in the largely calm water.
Record Warmth Possible in New England Today
Yesterday’s high temperatures broke multiple records for Oct. 3 in New England, and today’s high may threaten the October monthly record in Burlington, Vermont, according to the National Weather Service.
The forecast calls for 86 degrees at Burlington International Airport. That’s a degree warmer than the high temperature record for October, the weather service posted.
Today’s warmth may also threaten the record for Oct. 4 in Concord, New Hampshire (84 set in 1931). Record warm lows are also possible at Portland and Augusta in Maine, according to the weather service.
Record daily highs were set for Oct. 3 in Concord (85), Augusta (85) and Burlington (84, breaking the previous record of 82 set in 1891!). Also in Maine, the mercury reached a record 83 in Bangor, 81 in Portland and Millinocket, 80 in Houlton and 79 in Caribou.
Meanwhile, flooding is a concern this weekend, partly due to Tropical Storm Philippe, which should be post-tropical by then, a Weather Prediction Center forecast discussion says.
“At the surface a cold front will sweep through the eastern U.S., while ample moisture streams in ahead of it, and the low circulation associated with Philippe (which should be post-tropical by then) could track near or into Maine,” the discussion says. “This combination will lead to heavy rain and flooding concerns in the Northeast on Saturday.”
