107. How to find your due north
It’s a mission with no time frame.
Everyone should have a goal and a direction to go towards. Some people like putting time frames their goals, which I think is a mistake.
The most common goals — lose x pounds by the end of the year, get a promotion after two years or find a life partner — are out of our control. When we don’t achieve them we feel like a failure. As we should.
How do we achieve a goal that we have no control over?
It’s far more important instead to have a “Due North” — a direction you want to travel in. Something you can control.
The actions to reinforce your Due North are steps in the right direction.
For example, if you want to lose x pounds by the end of the year, your goal should be to only have one soda a week. Difficult to do? Yes. A “winnable” goal? Double yes.
What’s your Due North? What are you trying to achieve?
