Snow Shortfall Lingers in the East, Despite Big March Snowstorm

The seasonal snow shortfall in the East lives on, despite last weekend’s big early spring snowstorm.

Snow totals from the storm include up to 33.1 inches in Vermont, as much as 29.5 inches in New Hampshire, up to 29 inches in Maine and as much as 26.5 inches in New York state, according to reports posted by the National Weather Service.

“Despite the late season storm, seasonal snowfall totals are well below average across the entire region (the Eastern United States),” the weather service’s Eastern Region Headquarters posted last night.

You can blame climate change and El Niño, among other factors. And there are no big snowstorms in the near-term forecast for the East.

The seasonal snowfall shortfall continues a trend that began years ago. (Read my story from a year ago: Snowfall Maps Show Major Shortfalls in Northeast and Great Lakes States in Recent Winters).

As a result of climate change, winters are warming faster than other seasons in the Northeast, with fewer cold days, more warmer nights and temperatures projected to rise in the future, according to the Northeast Regional Climate Center, citing the Fifth National Climate Assessment.
