Snowfall and (Very!) Wet Weather Update for the Eastern U.S.

Remember the southern New England snowstorm four years ago?

It wasn’t a big one but as much as 4 to 6 inches of snow landed in higher elevations, and the April 17–18 event left at least a coating in much of the area, according to the National Weather Service.

Nothing like it is on the horizon now, and snow cover has largely vanished in the six-state region.

Meanwhile, seasonal snowfall totals in the Eastern U.S. have been well below normal at weather service climate stations, despite some significant to major snowstorms this winter and spring. It’s a trend that began years ago as winter warmth is on the rise.

Snowfall Maps Show Major Shortfalls in Northeast and Great Lakes States in Recent Winters

Through April 12, Caribou in northern Maine had received 88.1 inches of snow, or nearly 30 inches below its 114-inch cold season average. Burlington in Vermont had seen 60.8 inches versus its 85.8-inch average. Boston got just 9.8 inches of snow (39 inches below average). Concord in New Hampshire got 55.5 inches, nearly 1 foot below average.

At the same time, precipitation totals (rainfall plus the liquid equivalent of snow/sleet/ice) have been well above normal at most Eastern locations so far this year, according to the weather service’s Eastern Region Headquarters.

More weather and climate highlights:

— Globally, last month was the warmest March on record, according to the National Centers for Environmental Information. Snow cover extent in the Northern Hemisphere was the eighth smallest on record.

— Rhode Island had its second wettest January through March on record (since 1895), with 20.7 inches of total precipitation, or 9.11 inches above normal, according to the National Drought Information System. Last month was the state’s second wettest March on record, with 10.21 inches of total precipitation, or 6 above normal.

Connecticut had its fourth wettest January through March on record and fourth wettest March; Massachusetts had its sixth wettest first quarter on record and fourth wettest March; and New Hampshire had its eighth wettest first quarter and third wettest March.
