The bell tolled the hour with sombre grace. Its sonorous echo startled the ravens around the tower, and they rose to the sky like black cloaked wraiths, screeching their departure.

Their flight heralded the finality of the situation, ominously and inescapably.

Their obligation fulfilled, the mourners trudged away, the wind causing their scarves to trail behind them, ladies clutched their veils, men clutched their hats.

I could do nothing but clutch at my chest.

The shrill wind may have been bitter and cold on the skin, but it was nothing as compared to the hollow tempest that brewed in my breast.

You were gone, and I was alone.
