As the clouds settle over the city, and the sun sets over the river, my tired legs carry me homewards.

The pavement feels too hard under my feet. The cars’ exhausts too noisy. The grime too grimy.

I’ve shlepped this road too often. Been jostled one time too many. Had a rucksack swung in my face by uncaring travellers more than I care to count.

Sitting in the underground, the soot dries my throat and hits my lungs. I cough.

The train arrives, it always seems treacherously close to the platform. I cram myself in. Shoved aside by some princess and her poodle. And their dog.

Going to assume I’ll be standing for the next forty minutes.

I fumble in my rucksack for my Kindle.

Because no matter how bad it gets, I’ll always have my words.

Dedicated to Anna Breslin for reminding me that less is sometimes more (but when I can’t help it, more is still more).
