This was a beautifully planned job. Every minute detail had been looked at, scrutinised, and there were contingency plans for almost every roadblock.

“Almost?” he said. “Not good enough. I need a 100% fail-proof plan.”

I smiled. “Surely you can’t be that naive to think that we can control the uncontrollable? There are… what you call them… acts of God, which we have no control over. Natural calamities. Sudden changes in plans. I cannot control any of those.”

He wasn’t impressed. “Pfft… I thought being an atheist meant I didn’t have to deal with God.”

How thick-skulled can one be? And yet, he was in a much more powerful position than me. Sorry, that rhymed unnecessarily.

I opened the window. Then the cage. “Now, we wait.”

“Why?! It’s not like they can read the time! Don’t you have something that will attract them?”

I was on the verge of pulling my hair out. “They can sense time. They will return at around the same time, give or take 15 minutes either way.”

“So we wait?”

“Yes… we wait.”
