Acceptance

As a race, I believe we spend most of our lives searching for acceptance. And I don’t mean just acceptance by society in general. We look for acceptance in the decisions we take, in the friends we make, in the careers we choose, even those times when our little screws are loose.

In Damien Chazelle’s sparkling debut, Whiplash, JK Simmons’ tyrannical music teacher Terence Fletcher says, “There are no two words in the English language more harmful than ‘good job’.” I agree, to an extent. Good is the enemy of the great, especially when you know you can push yourself. But how far? How far can you push yourself before a little ‘good job’ helps in pushing you further?

‘Good job’ can be an acceptance of you doing your job well. There’s always the addendum, “I know you can do better.” Which is fine. Absolutely fine, as long as there’s recognition of a job well done.

That’s what I mean by acceptance. A few good words that can make somebody’s day. In a cruel, cutthroat world such as ours, it is the need of the hour.
